Scott wanted to give Lydia a gift to show her how much she meant to him, now more than ever. But it had to be perfect, and when he found it, he knew it was. She was convinced that her sole purpose of existence was to foretell violent death now, and whilst that was part of her, it wasn’t all of her.

The Tree of Life pendant with the delicate emerald was perfect. It symbolised the link between life and death, which is what Lydia was... along with beautiful, amazing, wise, kind, and one-of-a-kind, as far as he was concerned.

Despite what happened after their dinner, there was no doubt in Scott’s mind during his date with Lydia that he had feelings for her. A lot of feelings, and perhaps had even been underlying for a very long time but just concealed by a lot of other stuff going on.

She was beautiful, and he really wanted to give this thing a try. She was easy to talk to, and he knew there were probably a lot of reasons why this shouldn’t work. None of which seemed to matter anymore after they had all dealt with so much pain lately.

It really sucked having a falling-out with your best friend. It all happened so quickly and shocked the hell out of Scott that he hadn’t had time to catch himself before getting pissed off that he had been blindsided.

The enormity of the catalyst was, however, that Stiles was now dating someone, and Scott realised that he had selfishly failed to realise that would inevitably happen... one day, he would have to share Stiles, and that day was now. They had been partners in crime since their diapers days, and Scott knew that this was something he couldn’t screw up.

Scott couldn’t get Lydia off his mind after they did what they did that they probably shouldn’t have done. He couldn’t just leave things like this and waltz off camping with his mates. He didn’t know whether he should text her, or email her, or call her, or go over to talk to her. It was a lot to contemplate with an horrific hangover.

In the end, he just went online and ordered some flowers to have delivered to her. In the card, a simple - I’m sorry. Can we talk? - because he didn’t want to be that guy.
